On 30 October 2026 ArtCraft showed 20% off yearly plans and Adobe showed limited-time discounts on some tiers; the table shows regular prices. A credit buys a different amount of output on each service, so compare by the models you plan to use.
AI image and video generation: ArtCraft vs Firefly
ArtCraft focuses on control before generation. You place actors in a consistent location, pose characters, turn images into 3D meshes and composite layers in 3D, then render with your chosen model (README). Its catalog spans 16 image, 25 video, 5 audio, 11 3D-mesh and 5 world models, from families such as FLUX, Seedream, Kling, Veo, Hunyuan 3D and Marble.
Firefly's plans cover image, video and audio generation, with premium features such as Text to Video and Generate Speech paid for in generative credits, and access to "leading AI models from Adobe, Google, and more". Its free tier includes popular models such as Nano Banana (Firefly plans). Both tools give you access to third-party models. ArtCraft's difference is the 3D scene-building step and the open code.
Image editing: PhotoCraft vs Photoshop
PhotoCraft is the ArtCraft team's image editor, described as "an open-source, clean-room reimplementation of Adobe Photoshop" that keeps menus and shortcuts "where your hands expect them" (README). It opens and saves layered PSD and PSB files and supports 8-, 16- and 32-bit documents in RGB, CMYK, Lab and Grayscale (PhotoCraft page). Its developers are blunt about its status: early alpha, "not yet a Photoshop replacement for daily professional work", with gaps in generative features, typography depth and plug-in compatibility.
Photoshop 27.x needs Windows 10 or 11, or macOS 14, 15 or 26, 8 GB of RAM (16 GB recommended) and 10 GB of disk space, plus an internet connection for activation (Adobe requirements). Its official guide covers features such as Generative Fill, Generative Expand, Neural Filters and the Plugin Marketplace.
Motion graphics: EffectCraft vs After Effects
EffectCraft is a compositor built around compositions and layers, with Lottie import and export built in. Its README is candid: the first commit was on 1 October 2026, it "isn't yet a replacement for After Effects on client work", it cannot open .aep/.aepx projects, and After Effects plug-ins don't run (README). After Effects costs $22.99 a month on an annual plan, with a 7-day free trial (Adobe).

Vector illustration: VectorCraft vs Illustrator
VectorCraft is the suite's Illustrator-oriented vector editor, formerly announced as DrawCraft. It covers pen and Direct Selection, exact curve booleans, Shape Builder, gradients, live effects, image tracing, type and broad SVG/PDF/.ai export, and it is free under MIT or Apache-2.0 (README). It is not Adobe Illustrator, and it is not the unrelated vectorcraft math crate on crates.io/docs.rs.
The file boundary matters more than the tool list. VectorCraft reads and writes PDF-compatible .ai and can keep legacy version 7 .ai layers, groups and type, but it does not write Illustrator's proprietary editing data; its README still lists reliable .ai exchange as a gap (releases). Illustrator keeps the mature .ai ecosystem, plug-ins and print workflows (Adobe Illustrator). Test a copy of the client file before promising a round trip. Full guide: VectorCraft vector illustration.
Where Adobe is the better choice
- Professional, deadline-driven editing: both PhotoCraft and EffectCraft say they are not ready for it yet.
- Existing After Effects projects and plug-ins: EffectCraft can't open .aep files or run AE plug-ins (EffectCraft README).
- Illustrator-native handoff: VectorCraft writes PDF-compatible .ai but not proprietary Illustrator editing data, so live .ai layers and plug-ins still point to Illustrator (VectorCraft README).
- Generative editing inside a full photo editor: PhotoCraft lists AI/generative features as its biggest gap (PhotoCraft README); Photoshop has Generative Fill and Expand (Adobe Photoshop requirements).
- Mobile apps: Firefly and Photoshop offer web and mobile versions (Adobe Firefly plans).
Where ArtCraft is the better choice
- You want open-source code you can audit, fork or self-build (MIT/Apache-2.0).
- You want to stage scenes in 3D, pose characters and keep locations consistent before generating (features).
- You want to avoid a subscription by bringing your own compute (pricing).
- You work on Linux and are happy to use the Crafting Apps' Linux packages or build ArtCraft from source (apps, build guide).
Switching from Adobe: migration notes
- Photoshop files: PhotoCraft opens and saves PSD/PSB, but it is early alpha, so test your own files first (README).
- After Effects projects: they don't transfer. EffectCraft uses its own .ecproj format; Lottie is the shared exchange format (README).
- Plug-ins: Adobe plug-ins are not supported in PhotoCraft or EffectCraft (PhotoCraft, EffectCraft).
- Workflow: the Crafting Apps copy familiar layouts and shortcuts; ArtCraft adds an account sign-in at first launch (apps, quick start).

ArtCraft vs Adobe: frequently asked questions
Is ArtCraft a free alternative to Adobe?
For AI image and video generation, yes: ArtCraft is free, open-source software, and it can be used without a subscription by bringing your own compute. For Photoshop- or After Effects-style editing, the team's PhotoCraft and EffectCraft are free too, but both say they are not yet replacements for professional daily work.
Is ArtCraft cheaper than Adobe Firefly?
Both have a free starting point. ArtCraft's paid credit plans start at $10 a month for 1,000 credits; Firefly Standard is $9.99 a month for 2,000 generative credits (US prices, checked 20 October 2026). Credits are priced per model on each service, so the numbers are not directly comparable.
Can I open my Photoshop files in PhotoCraft?
Yes, PhotoCraft opens and saves layered PSD and PSB files. It is still early alpha, though, and its README lists Photoshop plug-in compatibility as a gap, so test your own files before you switch.
Can EffectCraft open After Effects projects?
No. EffectCraft saves its own .ecproj format and cannot open .aep or .aepx files, and After Effects plug-ins do not run in it. It can import and export Lottie animations.
Is VectorCraft the same as Illustrator, or as the crates.io crate?
Neither. VectorCraft is the ArtCraft team's free vector editor (formerly DrawCraft), not Adobe Illustrator. It imports and exports PDF-compatible .ai but does not write proprietary Illustrator editing data. The vectorcraft crate on crates.io/docs.rs is an unrelated Rust math library.
Which runs on Linux, ArtCraft or Adobe?
Adobe's Photoshop technical requirements list only Windows and macOS. ArtCraft has no Linux installer, but it can be built from source on Linux; the separate Crafting Apps ship Linux packages such as AppImage, deb, rpm and Flatpak.
Is ArtCraft affiliated with Adobe?
No. ArtCraft is built by the ArtCraft team and published on GitHub under storytold/artcraft. This comparison is independent of both Adobe and the ArtCraft team.
